About Me

I am Dr Masoud Shakiba, a Senior Lecturer, researcher, educator, and technology practitioner based in Auckland, New Zealand. My work sits at the intersection of education, industry, research, and emerging technologies, with a strong focus on turning knowledge into practical solutions with real-world impact.

At MIT and Unitec, I contribute to teaching, academic leadership, industry engagement, and research. I serve as the Capstone Project Coordinator and Industry & Alumni Champion, working closely with students, industry partners, and organisations to create authentic, industry-connected learning experiences.

My research focuses on Artificial Intelligence, IoT and Smart Systems, Data Science, Cloud Computing, Smart Agriculture, and HealthTech, with an emphasis on solving practical problems and creating impact beyond academia. I have contributed to 60+ research outputs and approximately NZD 600,000 in research projects and funding, and developed international research collaborations across New Zealand, Australia, Japan, China, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, and the United States. I am also the founder of the AIoT Impact Lab, supporting applied research and innovation in AI and IoT.

My commitment to excellence in teaching and research has been recognised through the Unitec Excellence in Teaching Award 2023 and the Excellence in Research Award 2025. These recognitions reflect my focus on delivering high-quality, industry-connected education while developing research that creates meaningful academic and real-world impact.

I am passionate about building bridges between education and industry. Through TechTALK, which I founded in 2018, I have connected thousands of students, academics, professionals, and organisations through industry-focused seminars and conversations. I have also contributed to industry advisory boards, technology communities, conferences, hackathons, and professional organisations, including leadership roles with IT Professionals New Zealand and the NZ IoT Alliance.

My approach is simple: research should solve meaningful problems, education should prepare people for the real world, and collaboration should create opportunities that none of us could achieve alone.

Hobbies

In my spare time, I enjoy playing badminton and futsal. Additionally, I have a strong passion for cooking and constantly explore new dishes and recipes to enhance my culinary skills.
